What is the Lie?

Writer's picture: Sarah BellSarah Bell

Do we truly believe God loves us? Do we believe He wants to be with us, that He delights in us, and that He longs for intimacy with each one of us?

The other day, during prayer, I caught a glimpse of just how deeply God loves us. As I prayed over my four precious children, I suddenly felt an overwhelming heaviness in my heart—a pain that was almost unbearable. It was as though I couldn’t cry hard enough to express the longing I felt for my kids. In that moment, I believe God allowed me to experience just a fraction of what He feels for us.

It wasn’t sadness, but rather an intense, overwhelming desire for my children to experience freedom, healing, and joy. I longed to wipe away every fear, every pain, and every burden in their little hearts. The feeling was so powerful, so overwhelming, it brought me to tears.

God used that moment to gently walk me through my own regrets—moments of weakness, mistakes I wish I could undo, and times where I might have caused unintentional hurt. He also reminded me of my own brokenness as a child and the lonely state of my heart. But here’s the beautiful part: in that moment, His love flooded my soul. His healing love gave me the strength to pour His truth and grace into my children through prayer.

His Love Looks Beyond

God doesn’t focus on our mistakes, regrets, or pain. He doesn’t define us by our past or by the lies we’ve believed. He sees us as His own, as His beloved children. He sees our full potential and lovingly calls us into it.

The truth is this: God has already forgiven our sins. As we confess and draw close to Him, He restores and redeems every broken area in our lives.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:35, 37-39

Nothing—absolutely nothing—can separate us from His love.

The Living Water

John 4:14 says:

“But whoever drinks the water that I give him will never be thirsty again. But the water that I give him will become in him a spring of water [satisfying his thirst for God] welling up [continually flowing, bubbling within him] to eternal life.” (AMP)

This is the invitation: allow the Holy Spirit to saturate you in God’s love. Let Him flush out the lies you’ve believed—about God, yourself, your family, and even church traditions. Allow Him to heal and rewrite the memories and thought patterns that have shaped your life, replacing them with His truth.

He is the Truth, the Way, and the Life (John 14:6).

So today, rejoice in your adoption as His child. Rejoice in the new life He offers, and let the Holy Spirit refresh your heart. Take this moment to lean into His love—because it’s deeper, wider, and more powerful than you could ever imagine.
